Biography

Dr. Charuta J. Puranik is a cornea, cataract, refractive, and ocular surface surgeon whose work lies at the intersection of clinical ophthalmology, biologic healing, and regenerative science. Trained at the L V Prasad Eye Institute, she developed a deep academic and surgical interest in corneal disease, ocular surface reconstruction, and advanced anterior segment surgery under the mentorship of Dr. Virender Sangwan.

Her formative years in corneal surgery were shaped by exposure to limbal stem‑cell transplantation, ocular surface rehabilitation, immune‑mediated corneal disease, and biologically restorative approaches to vision preservation. Over time, these experiences evolved into a broader intellectual fascination with the eye’s intrinsic healing mechanisms — particularly ocular immune privilege, corneal nerve recovery, epithelial regeneration, graft integration, and tissue adaptation after surgery.

Dr. Puranik’s academic interests extend beyond conventional surgical paradigms into regenerative ophthalmology and translational tissue science. Her work has explored corneal biomechanics, endothelial biology, hydrogel‑based corneal regeneration, donor cornea preservation, and biologically intelligent approaches to tissue restoration. She has contributed to research in keratoconus models, corneal endothelial science, and regenerative biomaterials, including work on decellularized corneal matrix hydrogels and ocular surface restoration.

Her international academic exposure includes observership training at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine (endothelial regeneration), Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and the Texas Heart Institute. These experiences shaped her belief that the future of ophthalmology will move toward restoration‑oriented, biologically adaptive interventions.

Clinically, her work spans corneal transplantation, endothelial keratoplasty, cataract surgery, refractive surgery, dry eye disease, ocular surface disorders, and complex anterior segment reconstruction. She is the Founder and Director of Oculus Regenerus Eye Care & Research Center in Hyderabad and serves as Senior Cornea and Refractive Consultant at Medivision Eye Hospital.

“I have long been fascinated by the eye not merely as an optical organ, but as a biologic system uniquely capable of healing, adaptation, and integration. Corneal surgery, ocular surface reconstruction, and regenerative ophthalmology represent an evolving dialogue between surgical precision and intrinsic tissue intelligence.”
